The Old Man and the Sea is the story of an old fisherman named Santiago, who travels to catch a great marlin. The Old Man and the Sea seems to be more chronicle than fable and the story’s setting is familiar to the audience. Ernest Hemingway, the American writer of the book, uses the story to illustrate the idea that a person needs to have faith in what he or she is doing in order to succeed. In his book, he plots his main character as an old man who is not physically strong as other young fisherman, but is mentally powerful and patient. This makes the old man able to catch a huge fish that no one in his city has ever seen before. However, this almost leads to tragedy as there were a lot of moments where the old man was placed to be in danger. Vice versa, overcoming this difficulty has led the man’s efforts, patience, devotions, and so on to be more acknowledged by both the readers and villagers in the city. Therefore, even though there are a lot of important ideas in this story, the author mainly wants to focus more on the importance of faith and patience.

In The Old man the Sea, Hemingway expresses the importance of a person having his or her faith. The author explores the importance of faith in his story’s climax, where the old man tries to catch a huge fish. Before going to the peak of the story, there was a moment when the old man was too exhausted to catch the fish, but he often tries to think that he will be able to achieve his goal. This empowers the old man to catch the fish that he wished for. Moreover, when there was a time when the old man was attacked by sharks, he still showed faith that he could survive from this difficulty and be able to go back to his house. As the old man had a belief in his ability to overcome these difficulties, he was able to achieve of what he wanted to have. Thus, the story expresses that a person should have a clear faith, so that he or she can achieve what he or she wants.

In the topic of success, there are a lot of quotes that says that a person needs to be patient, but not too patient to lose his or her opportunity. In The Old Man and the Sea, there are a lot of moments when the old man showed his perseverance. For instance, there was a moment when a huge fish came near to the old man’s boat and towards him. However, he was too patient to get a good shot directly towards its heart. Furthermore, before going to his house, he had a moment of being attacked by a lot of sharks. However, the old man was patient and he was able to manage those attacks from sharks and able to save his life. But, what if the old man was not that patient and threw the spear towards that fish or sharks. Would he be able to catch that fish or spare his life from sharks? By plotting the point of the importance of “patience”, it allows readers to read a book with a more depth.

The Old Man and the Sea, mainly focuses on how important it is for a person to be at confident in him or herself, and how patience leads to achieve towards their success. As the old man had a confidence and patience, it later made him to achieve his goal of catching a big fish. This reminds us that confidence and patience is necessary in our lives.
